Dr Paul Kalokerinos

Medical Oncologist

Training in all of the major cancer centres of South East Queensland. He provides a high-level, evidence-based cancer treatment service to residents in both the metropolitan and wider Brisbane areas.

Dr Kalokerinos’ training involved treating numerous patients in cancer units throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast regions. He has broad experience in caring for patients with a wide range of cancer subtypes, both common and rare, and has been exposed to the most cutting-edge cancer treatments through his work with patients enrolled in clinical trials.

Prior to completing his training in Queensland, he worked in the United Kingdom at well recognised centres including The Royal Free and Kings College hospitals.

Medical Oncology is a complex, evolving discipline where each case is unique. New research and treatment options are continually emerging and Dr Kalokerinos is committed to staying at the forefront of international developments. He firmly believes that the open communication and active involvement of patients in their management plans is essential to providing optimal care. He also recognises the necessity of integrating other health care professionals, specialists, and general practitioners into the long-term oncological plans of newly diagnosed cancer patients.

The application of these important principles to each individual case enables Dr Kalokerinos to adhere to his philosophy of treating the patient and not just the disease.

Dr Rebecca Cleary

Dr Rebecca Cleary is a Clinical and Laboratory Haematologist with a broad range of clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of both malignant and non-malignant haematological presentations. Rebecca has a strong focus on communication, establishing an excellent rapport with her patients and their families. Ensuring that all patients have a thorough understanding of their diagnosis and treatment plan is a priority in Rebecca’s practice.

Rebecca consults within Haematology Queensland (HQ). HQ is an independently owned group of three Brisbane Haematologists who offer a unique, personalised approach to Haematology, providing an exceptional standard of care to patients. Rebecca consults from Westside Private Hospital in Taringa, and the North Lakes Day Hospital; as well as providing in-hospital patient care at The Wesley Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital.

Rebecca is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA). After completing her medical training at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom in 2006, Rebecca immigrated to Australia in 2008. She subsequently completed her specialist advanced training in clinical and laboratory haematology at a number of Brisbane hospitals including the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Rebecca has a strong focus on current best practice by keeping up to date with developments in the field of haematology and participating in professional development and teaching. In addition to her practice with HQ, Rebecca holds positions as a staff specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and QML pathology.

Rebecca has a diverse interest in the diagnosis and management of both malignant and non-malignant haematological issues, including:

Dr Tzu-yang Wang

Dr Tzu-yang Wang is a Clinical & Laboratory Haematologist at Haematology Queensland (HQ).
He is also appointed as

• Staff Specialist – Princess Alexandra Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital
• Pathologist – QML pathology
• Senior Lecturer – University of Queensland

Haematology Queensland is independently owned by a group of Haematologists who offer a personalised approach to the complex needs of patients without the constraints of “big corporates”.

In addition to providing the best possible standard of care to patients. He is also a current investigator in over 15 clinical trials across a broad range of haematological disorders, allowing patients access to cutting edge treatment that may not otherwise be possible.

Tzu-yang received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours at the University of Queensland in 2008 and completed specialist training at the Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital. He has also worked as a Staff Specialists at these institutions. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and The Royal College of Pathologist of Australasia.

He has special interests in the diagnosis and management in both malignant and non-malignant haematological problems, including:

• Myeloma

Tzu-yang is a contributor to eviQ – Australian consensus guideline in cancer management as well as a member of the Australian Leukaemia and Lymphoma group. He has published numerous posters at Haematology Society in transplant, malignant and non-malignant haematology. He is also a Senior Lecturer of The University of Queensland and regularly teaches physician trainees as well as junior medical staff in preparation for their specialty exam.

Dr Gary Gibson is a Specialist General Practitioner who currently runs a private therapeutic venesection service at Westside Haematology and Oncology Clinic. He also provides procedural support to QML Pathology.

Gary completed his medical training at the University of Queensland in 1986 before moving into rural General Practice. After returning to Brisbane in 1996 with his family, he started working at QML Pathology.

He was instrumental in establishing a Medical Procedure Unit encompassing bone marrow aspirate collection, dynamic hormonal testing and therapeutic venesections. During this time, his interest in the diagnosis and management of genetic haemochromatosis has grown, as evidenced by his association with bodies such as the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and Haemochromatosis Australia.

Special Interests: Lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and gynaecological cancers.

Dr Jones completed his post-graduate medical training at the University of Queensland in 2007 following a Bachelor of Science in 2003. He undertook basic physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and completed 3 years of advanced training in medical oncology in 2016. This training included work at the Royal Brisbane, Princess Alexandra, Mater South Brisbane, Toowoomba, and Gold Coast Hospitals.

Upon obtaining his fellowship, he commenced work in the public system as a Staff Specialist at Mater Hospital South Brisbane and Gold Coast University Hospital, and as a locum at Cairns Base Hospital.

Throughout 2017 he provided a private oncology service to Cairns alongside commencing private work in Brisbane.

He is currently employed as a Staff Specialist at Gold Coast University Hospital and Mater Private Hospital Springfield. He also provides a private service at both Mater Private Hospital Springfield and South Brisbane, along with Westside Private Hospital.
